Originally settled in 1636 under the Indian name Cochichewick, it was ultimately incorporated as the Town of Andover in 1646 after the name of the town in England where many of the settlers had originally come from. Manufacturing was the town's initial industry. Powder, wool and paper were all manufactured in the area. In recent years, Andover has attracted companies involved in national defense contracting, computer hardware and software and medical products.

The region north of Boston is rich with culture and recreational activities. Towns that share this region with Andover include Salem, famous for the witch trials of the 1690s; Marblehead, a first-rate east coast sailing port; Essex, known for abundant antique shopping and great seafood; and Salisbury, home of the 520-acre Salisbury Beach State Reservation.

Andover is a town with its own unique culture. The Addison Gallery of American Art is New England's only stop for nationally touring exhibitions and has an impressive permanent collection of art by prominent American artists. The Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology focuses on American history as far back as 12,000 years. Collections focus on the American Indian in North America. Andover is also home to Massachusetts School of Law and the fine Memorial Hall Library.
